Who or what is "Idiomatika Translations"?
Idiomatika Translations is the trading name of Jeremy Smith, a professional freelancer translating from French and Spanish into English.
Is Idiomatika Translations an agency or freelance translator site?
Idiomatika Translations is a freelance translator site, not an agency. We therefore do not accept CVs or résumés from other translators!
Why do professional translators only translate into their mother tongue?
Only a native speaker can capture the nuance and tone of their language. A foreigner cannot consistently write at the same level of a native, no matter how skilled he may be at the language.
Can't I get translations done in other languages through Idiomatika Translations?
Idiomatika offers translations from either French or Spanish into English. However, I can contact trusted freelance professionals working throughout Europe.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to use a free web-based translation program?
Yes. But these programs translate on a word-for-word basis. They are only meant to be used to get the gist of what a text is about. The results of such a program are full of grammatical errors and wrong vocabulary, and therefore cannot be used in a professional context.
What is the difference between a professional freelance translator and an agency?
A professional freelance translator is exactly that: a translator. He may deal directly or indirectly (through agencies) with clients. An agency acts as intermediary between the client and the freelance translator. Idiomatika Translations is the trading name of a freelance translator, not an agency.
What qualifications and experience do you have?
I am a graduate in Modern Languages and European Studies from the University of Salford and an Associate of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. I read French and Spanish at university and spent a year at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. I worked for four years as an in-house translator in Paris, France. How can I request a quotation?

How do your rates compare with other translators’?
My rates are neither cheap nor expensive. I aim to offer value for money.
Do you charge by the source or target document word count?
Usually, I charge by the number of words in the finished translation. The estimate you receive is based on the number of words in your source text.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. 24 euro is my minimum charge.
Can I pay online for my translation?
Yes. Our payment page has an online payment facility via

Which currencies do you accept?
Moneybookers accept Visa, Mastercard, Visa Electron and Delta credit/debit card payments in all major currencies. We accept payments by cheque and bank transfer in GBP, Euro, or US Dollars by preference.
Can I pay by cheque?
Yes.
Can I pay by direct bank transfer?
Yes. Please contact me for my bank details.
Do I pay before you begin to translate my document or on completion?
Payment should be made within 30 days of the date of invoicing, in accordance with
Directive 2000/35/EC of the European Parliament and of the
Council of 29th June 2000 on combating late payment in commercial
transactions. After 30 days, interest may be applicable.
What about VAT?
VAT is not applicable to invoices sent by Idiomatika Translations.
What do I do if I’m not happy with my translation?
Please get in touch and I will try and resolve any problems that have arisen.
