Everyone else has been posting this, so why shouldn’t I? The long awaited replacement for Eurodicautom has been made publicly available - IATE (InterActive Terminology for Europe). It looks quite promising - term definitions are kept in suitably separate contexts, the full entries for which can be viewed at the click of a mouse. An interesting addition is the reliability indicator, which is given a value of 1 (reliability not verified), 2 (minimum reliability) and 3 (reliable). The term reference source is always given - sometimes with a link to the relevant online glossary. A useful addition to a translator’s arsenal.

At long last…

A mere year after setting up this blog, I’m going to start building up some good, regular content.

Alas, my first proper post may turn into something of a linkdump.

I am increasingly interested in minority languages and attempts to revive them and/or continue their use in the face of the majority language in their modern-day countries and the onslaught of English across the world.

Cá Bhfuil Na Gaeilgeoirí? - Gaelic is the first official language of Ireland, with 25% of the population claiming to speak it. But can that true? To put it to the test, Manchán Magan set off round the country with one self-imposed handicap - to never utter a word of English. Watch the TV series here.

Eiro or Euro?

Latvia has picked a linguistic row with its European partners about how to spell the word ‘euro’ in a language with no way to spell ‘eu’.

Many hours of wrangling between ministers and officials in Brussels and Riga have failed to resolve the question of whether the Baltic state can refer to the single currency, which it hopes to adopt in 2008, as the ‘eiro’ (pronounced ‘aero’), in official documents.
